Amernas - it's intended to be a humorous article, although it does in fact have something to do with reality. If you were well into your preparations, you'd get the joke a little better. In any case, my apologies if you were expecting special insight into your readiness for the lab.

Send me an e-mail via the contact form describing your preparations thus far, and I'll give you my 2 cents as to how ready you might be.

Cciepursuit now you got me interested :). You can do that? is that by using Policy Based Routing or is it some easy command you can just type in?

Roger you can emulate a whole CCIE lab with just GNS3 (Internetwork Expert has Dynamips-tailored workbooks for their Vol. 2). However as in the link Carl has pointed out, it is also worth knowing that the switch module in the routers will not support Layer 3 without some intervention from the router itself (router on a stick approach). There are also a few stuff that you are not able to do.

Personally for me I am hooking up Dynamips/GNS3 to real switches (4x8-ports 3560s. Not ideal but that's what my vendor is willing to loan me). That way you can have real layer 3 switching and at the same time offload a little CPU resources from your GNS3 topology.

For the switching side of things I used the 16 port module for as many things as I could. (some commands are not on these switch modules obviously) Yeah a switch emulator would be great!
I don't think it's coming soon, though.
See the link:
http://7200emu.hacki.at/viewtopic.php?t=658&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

What I plan on doing long term, though, is acquiring a couple 3550s and 3560s to connect to the Dynamips topology. (or 1 of each depending on how I have to acquire them - the less $$ spent the better as I'm at my spending max at this point :) )

You say you are using GNS3 to bring up the topologies - are you using the 16 port switch module in the routers for the switching or do you have any real switches - I have just started to build my lab but wondering if I can do it all on GNS3? Do you know if they are going to develop the switches support any time in the future ?

Keep at it - Roger

*** My current study regimen consists of 2-4 hours of study each evening during the week and then 6-8 hours on each day during the weekend. I am still keeping a few days open for other activites here and there so that my wife does not divorce me. ***

This is definitely the hardest part of your preparation Carl ;-) but I am sure the missus will be happy once you get the numbers! That's what I keep telling my wife nowadays anyway.

You've got an aggressive schedule planned, considering you're also working. If you're a fast learner, it's possible, but I think you've got an uphill battle ahead of you. I really look forward to reading how you're making out.

I would consider mixing in Narbik's technology-focused labs with the IE dynamips labs. As others have mentioned, you might consider doing Narbik's before doing full-scale labs. That's your call, however you learn best. But I know for me, I wish I'd done technology-focused labs before I'd jumped into the NMC DOiT labs. My foundation would have been stronger.

I don't think IE Volume 2 is meant to teach you the fundamentals of a technology so much as get you more practice with them, deepen an already solid understanding, and get you used to combining them. I also started out with Vol2 and went back to Vol1+Narbik's stuff. The Vol2 labs were shockingly easy after that (in comparison, they still kicked my butt). I went from a week to do a lab to finishing them within 8 hours. It took about 4 months to do Vol1+Narbik, as I didn't cap my time in any way while exploring and understanding the technologies.

The broken down labs by technology are real nice to start with. I did the same thing as starting out with Internetwork Expert's wb II after only a few wb I labs and it was a mistake :).

You will move slow through the first full full labs either way though. It is just par for the course. Even after doing a bunch of technology focused labs it is still a bit slow.

See you at Narbik's camp in November!

Good luck with your studies Carl. Your study plan looks very good. I also had a plan similar to yours to pass the R&S Lab but I focused on materials from IPExpert and IE. I think that if you stick to your schedule, 4 months should suffice to pass the exam.
